How to Add a Border to a Circle Photo on iPhone
Add a ring around a circular photo in Canva on iPhone, adjust its color and thickness, and keep the border visible when you save or upload it.
To add a border to a circle photo on your iPhone, use a circular photo frame in Canva, select the frame, and open Stroke style. Choose a line style, adjust its weight, and set the border color. This creates a ring around the photo where the selected frame supports border editing.
Start with a modest border and preview the result at the size you'll actually use. A ring that looks subtle in the editor can take up much of a small profile picture.
Start with a circular photo frame
Open your Canva design on iPhone and select the circular frame containing your photo. If you haven't made one yet, follow our Canva circle-crop guide, then return here to add the outline.
Make sure you're selecting the frame rather than the page background or a separate decorative element. Canva's frames guide explains which frames have editable borders and how to access their controls.
Set the border thickness and color
- Select the framed photo and find Stroke style in the editor toolbar. The toolbar layout can vary by app version.
- Choose the line style you want. A plain, continuous line is a useful starting point for a profile photo.
- Adjust the stroke weight to change the ring's thickness.
- Select the border's color tile, also described as Stroke color, and choose a color.
- Review the whole design, then view it small enough to resemble the final avatar or layout.
Canva documents these controls in its border and corner guide. If they aren't available for your chosen frame, try another basic circular frame that supports them.
For a white border, check it against a darker background while editing. A white ring on a white page can be difficult to see even when it is present. For a colored border, choose a shade that remains distinct from both the photo's edge and the surrounding design.
Leave room around the ring
Keep the complete border inside the page rather than placing the circle directly against its edges. Leave some space around the photo's subject too, especially near hair, ears or the top of a logo.
If you're preparing an avatar, preview the uploaded image in the destination app before confirming it. Its crop may trim your design differently from Canva. Reposition or scale the image until the ring is visible all the way around.

Download and check the saved border
Use Share → Download, select the file type and page you need, then download. Available settings and premium content can depend on your plan; see Canva's download instructions.
If you need transparent corners outside the ring, Canva's transparent-background instructions require an eligible plan and the Transparent background option with PNG or WebP. A regular PNG download can still contain the page background.
Open the saved file and check the ring before uploading it. If you're relying on transparency, place the result over another background color. Our white-background troubleshooting guide explains how to distinguish a viewing background from white pixels in the file.
Fix a border that looks wrong
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| A rectangular outline | Select the circular frame instead of the page or another object. |
| A white ring seems missing | Preview it against a contrasting background. |
| Part of the ring is cut off | Move it away from the page edge and check the destination crop. |
| The ring overwhelms the face | Reduce the stroke weight and preview at avatar size. |
